Daniel has spent centuries falling in love with the same girl. Life after life, crossing continents and dynasties, he and Sophia (despite her changing name and form) have been drawn together-and he remembers it all. Daniel has "the memory", the ability to recall past lives and recognize souls of those he's previously known. It is a gift and a curse. For all the times that he and Sophia have been drawn together throughout history, they have also been torn painfully, fatally, apart. A love always too short.
Interwoven through Sophia and Daniel's unfolding present day relationship are glimpses of their expansive history together. From 552 Asia Minor to 1918 England and 1972 Virginia, the two souls share a long and sometimes torturous path of seeking each other time and time again. But just when young Sophia (now "Lucy" in the present) finally begins to awaken to the secret of their shared past, to understand the true reason for the strength of their attraction, the mysterious force that has always torn them apart reappears. Ultimately, they must come to understand what stands in the way of their love if they are ever to spend a lifetime together.
I think it was also this month that my friend, Maricar suggested a 30-book challenge, and by that 30-book challenge she means that we would try to read 30 books within a year. I declined to that challenge. Haha. It's just that if I accepted it, again, I will push myself to my limits and might end up getting sick again. :[ *I had horrible experience from challenges.* Instead I convinced myself to go back into reading again. I think I neglected that duty of mine for a very long time. So last April 17 I purchased this book. Yay! I remember posting on my FB page that I wanted to buy this book but hesitated at the last minute because I read some review that it was not that good. I was afraid that I might end up not liking it too. But despite of what I read I bought it nevertheless. Hahaha! Anyway it was discounted by 10 percent, so what the heck, why not buy it.
I set aside the review I've read about this and just enjoy the book, enjoy reading it. And I must say that I really enjoyed this book. :) Well, not totally because when I'm halfway through reading it, my head was shouting, "Why can't they end up seeing each other and end this story?" When I was in high school I had this fantasy that everyone has it's own character even before they were born. I believe in reincarnation by then and I believed that I was once a beautiful princess. LOL. And I think that's the reason why I enjoy this book. And it helps that I expected less on this book. :) I love the shifting of time and POV, it was smoothly written that it will not confused you.
Here are some of my favorite lines and conversation between the book's characters:
"We'll bathe together someday," I told her with a heave of contentment.
"Will we?"
"Yes. Someday you'll be free. Then I will find you and we'll be happy as this."
She had tears in her eyes and suds on her fingers. "How can that be true?"
"It might take a long time, longer than you imagine, but someday we will."
"Do you promise me?"
I looked at her and made another fateful choice. "I do."

"What?," He was already halfway across the lobby.
"In high school, I never understood. Why didn't you love her then."
He walked back to Marnie and looked straight in her eyes. "I did love her. I've loved from the first time I saw her."
